Just another beautiful summer weekend coming up. I shouldn’t say “just,” since I think it implies a certain complacency, which I don’t feel. These clear, pleasant summer days that we are privileged to enjoy in June and occasionally throughout the summer, before the humidity sets in, are gifts from above. We sat on the balcony last night, just listening to the breeze in the trees and sipping some port. I didn’t want to go inside.
I was also at the farm yesterday. We belong to the Anchor Run Farm CSA (community supported agriculture) and pick up our half-share every other Thursday. Beautiful, huge greens – collards, kale, vitamin greens, chard, mustard greens, broccoli rabe, mizuna, arugula, lettuce (enormous!), as well as big red and purple radishes. I realized too late I should have taken pictures of the radishes to show you. They are mostly gone already! And I picked snow peas and sugar snap peas – and ate quite a few while doing so. Eating seasonally is easy this time of year.
What can you expect to find produce-wise this week at local farm markets? All the greens mentioned above, of course, and raspberries are coming in, blueberries to follow soon. You might also find broccoli, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, and peas. Everything is a bit early this year due to the warm weather and rain we had earlier in the spring (a local farmer told me his peaches will be three weeks early this year). Cherries might be showing up as well. One of our Facebook friends let us know that Myers Orchard near Quakertown has pick-your-own cherries now and sour cherries soon (thanks, John). And the Milk House Farm Market is now bringing their beautiful produce to the Stockton Farmers’ Market on Fridays as well as all weekend.
Other fun stuff: the Stone Brewing Co. luncheon at Isaac Newton’s in Newtown on Saturday, a chicken BBQ dinner both at the Springtown Fire Co. and the West Amwell Firehouse.
