Our first snowfall! And this weekend looks like our first real snowstorm is coming. Learn how to make warm drinks, enjoy a free dinner, or pick up something a little sweet to munch on while you look at the snow from your window.
There will be a free dinner at the Presbyterian Church of Deep Run in Perkasie today, Monday, January 18. The church always opens its doors the third Monday of each month so the community can have home cooked meals and tasty desserts. The meal is served in Hoopes Hall from 5:30-6:30 pm. The menu includes pork and sauerkraut with homemade treats for dessert. Note: During the winter, if Pennridge School District closes due to inclement weather, the dinner will not be held on that day.
Learn how to make some warm drinks to keep you toasty all through the winter. Head to the Logan Inn in New Hope for this week for Classes in Cocktails: Lava Libations. Their bar instructor will lead you through steps on how to make hot cocoa, hot toddys and hot cider. Appetizers, bar supplies and ingredients are all included. The class begins at 7 pm on Wednesday, January 20. It’s $45 per person, and while you are there, be sure to include #classesincocktails and tag @loganinnpa in all your social media posts. RSVP by calling 215.862.2300.
In Newtown at the Pickering Manor, there will be a free, one-hour informational seminar titled, “Healthy Eating – Feeding your Body Mind and Soul,” on Thursday, January 21. Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr.’s favorite pie was pecan pie? Even activists and leaders need to indulge in sweets now and then. The thought of pie was too much to bear, so here’s a short list of where you can pick up pies and pastries in Bucks County. [Did we miss one of your favorite places? Email us and let us know who makes your favorite pies.]
- Crossroads Bake Shop (Doylestown) Some of the best bread in Bucks County, for sure, but don’t forget the cakes and pies too. For January and February see their specials for upcoming events like Valentine’s Day, Fasnacht Day and the Super Bowl. The vegan chocolate cake grabbed my attention…
- Maryanne Pastry Shoppe (Doylestown) One thing I recommend is the sticky buns. They are packed with plump raisins, crunch walnuts, lots of syrupy sticky stuff that you can lick clean when you are done!
- Newtown Farmers Market (Newtown) Stop by Riehl’s Bakery for some good old-fashioned Amish baked goods: cookies, breads, sticky buns, cakes, whoopie pies (and mini-whoopie pies too) and over a dozen kinds of pies.
- Pudge Cakes (New Hope) This bakery is filled with goodies. Galettes, cake pops, cream puffs, whoopie pies, donuts, pies and more. Not only is the shop adorable, but the goodies are too!
Check out our recipe for Derby Pie, which is like pecan pie only better! (Can you say chocolate?)
