Oktoberfest. How can you get tired of the many local events that celebrate this German tradition? We’ve highlighted a few for this week, including Bucks County Taste Dinner Club’s own “German Fall Grillfest.” Be sure to check that out, among the other great dinners and beer inspired events.
Celebrate Paulaner, a German brewery, on Tuesday, October 20, starting at 7 pm. It’s an exclusive Paulaner beer pairing dinner, including a five-course meal featuring the beers of Paulaner and the Oktoberfest tastes of the Newportville Inn. Each course will be paired with an accompanying beer, and the guests can learn how the beer can compliment the flavors. For details and reservations ask the waitstaff or call 215.785.6090.
You might have seen, heard or even attended Caleb’s American Kitchen’s last Friend of a Farmer Dinner, and if you didn’t get a chance to go you are in luck. This Wednesday, October 21, Caleb’s is having another dinner, only this time to benefit the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance (BCFA). The dinner is a four-course meal created from seasonal produce and livestock from local and regional farms in Bucks County and New Jersey.
The October menu includes products from the following farms: Durham Glen Farm (Pipersville), Shibumi Farm (Princeton), None Such Farm (Buckingham), Manoff Orchards (Solebury), Blue Moon Acres (Buckingham), Shady Brook Farm (Newtown), Castle Valley Mill (Doylestown), Tanner Brothers Dairy (Richboro), seafood from Cape May, NJ and pork products from Lancaster and Nazareth, PA.
To view the menu, visit their website. Reservations are strongly recommended. The benefit dinner is 5 – 11 pm, and is $60 per person (tax and gratuity not included). In addition to the BCFA Friend of a Farmer dinner, Caleb’s American Kitchen will conclude the farming season with two last Friend of a Farmer dinners on Thursday, October 22 and Friday, October 23.
You might be thinking, “Another Oktoberfest?” But, this is not your typical Oktoberfest. Join the Bucks County Taste Dinner Club at the Logan Inn for a truly authentic German barbecue (or, “Grillfest” as they say in Germany). We’re talking real German sausages, German salads, locally baked pretzel rolls, German desserts and two fine German beers, all out on the lovely patio at the Logan Inn. All ages are invited, as long as you’re old enough to drink. (Click here for the full menu.)
There’s more. Included in the ticket price is a “Kick the Keg” card too! This entitles the bearer to two free drafts and half price off additional beers until the keg runs dry. It will definitely be a German celebration. The event is $59 per person and is from 6 – 9 pm on Wednesday, October 20. Buy your tickets here.
Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets: Apples, beets, broccoli, napa cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, collards, escarole, fennel, lettuce, garlic, ginger, green beans, pears, cut herbs, kale, leeks, mushrooms, onions, oregano, chili peppers, potatoes, radishes, rosemary, sage, Swiss chard, summer squash and winter squash, thyme, turnips and more. [Availability will vary by market.]
Most markets will also have eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
