Ah, June. A month full of graduations, weddings, and a lot of food. Don’t forget Father’s Day is this Sunday. Here are some fun foodie events happening this week.
On Saturday, June 15, Casa Casale in Peddler’s Village will be hosting Emilio Mignucci of Di Bruno Bros. for a book signing of the newly released “Di Bruno Bros House of Cheese: A Guide to Wedges, Recipes, and Pairings”. There will be cheese tastings and the book will be available for purchase. Di Bruno Bros. is a famous South Philly purveyor of cheeses, cured meats and other yummy gourmet items.
Later in the week on June 18, just across the courtyard from Casa Casale, Earl’s Bucks County presents another one of their Winemaker Dinners, this one with winemaker Susan Lueker from Simi Winery in Sonoma Valley. The four course menu – each course paired with a Simi wine – includes sea bass, crispy soft shell crab, veal tenderloin and Lancaster grass-fed NY sirloin. Earl’s does a great job of sourcing their ingredients locally. The cost of the dinner is $70. Contact them at 215-794-4020 for reservations.
In the community this week we’ve got lots of food going on. Tonight (June 14) the Plumsteadville Grange will put on a delicious fresh dinner of fish, fries, and salad. Proceeds benefit the Doylestown Intermediate Unit for Deaf Children. Take it to go, or sit down and enjoy eating at the Grange Hall with your neighbors. Adults $7. Children under 12 years of age $5.
On Sunday, June 16, both the Perkasie Fire Co. and the Riegelsville Fire House will have their monthly breakfasts. Perkasie’s is “All You Can Eat,” too. See the calendar below for full details.
Two churches are hosting Free Community Dinners this week. On Monday, June 17, there will be one at the Presbyterian Church of Deep Run in Perkasie and on Wednesday, June 19, Christ Community Bible Church in Perkasie will also host a free dinner.
Also on Wednesday, it will be your last chance to get fresh, homemade pierogies at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Warrington. The pierogy makers take a break for summer. They’ll return in September. Meanwhile, the church will hold their Annual Festival & Ukrainian Dinner on Sunday, June 23. Come for homemade pierogies, holubschi (stuffed cabbage) kielbas with sauerkraut, holuschky (noodles with cabbage), hot dogs, desserts and beverages. See our previous post all about the pierogy operation.
If you haven’t heard of Rolling Harvest Food Rescue yet, allow me to introduce you. The non-profit organization, begun by Cathy Snyder four years ago, collects donated healthy produce and food from area farms and delivers it to over two dozen food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters in Bucks and Hunterdon counties. On this Thursday, June 20, they will be hosting Dr. Joel Fuhrman, NY Times best-selling author and nationally recognized speaker on health and nutrition, for their first ever fundraiser. The event takes place at the beautiful Gravity Hill Farm in Titusville, NJ. For more information, click here. Tickets must be bought in advance and seating is limited.
To market, to market. Hot off the press this week is the 2013 Fresh from Bucks County Farms Guide, produced by the Penn State Cooperative Extension, listing all farms and farm markets who sell directly to the consumer in the county. You’ll see hard copies all around, but you can also download it here.
New arrivals this week at area farmers’ markets are summer squash, zucchini, green beans, snap peas, snow peas, beets and carrots. You’ll also find arugula, asparagus, bok choi, broccoli, broccoli rabe, cabbage, collard greens, fennel, garlic, garlic scapes, green onions, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce varieties, mushrooms, new potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, scallions, spinach, strawberries, Swiss chard, turnips, watercress and and I’m sure a few things I’ve missed. You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.
