September!? Yes, it’s here. And there is SO much going on this coming month in the food calendar: fall harvest events, farm-to-table dinners, beer fests and wine harvest festivals, to name a few.
Pierogi & Kielbasa. This weekend and next is the 48th Polish-American Festival at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown. Music, rides, crafts and, of course, lots of Polish food: grilled, steamed and smoked kielbasa, golabki, placki, pierogi, Polish ice, beer and babka, as well as fair standards like funnel cake, chicken fingers, etc. For more information, go to their website.
Summer Farm Tour and Potluck. The Bucks County Foodshed Alliance holds their last summer farm tour of the season this Wednesday, September 4 at the newest CSA farm in Bucks, Roots to River Farm in Solebury. This new “transitional organic” 12.5 acre farming operation is owned by young farmer Malaika Spencer, a Bucks County native who is returning to her “roots” after years of experience on farms in the U.S. and abroad. The farm is currently producing its first season of vegetables with no-pesticides or no-herbicides. Potluck begins at 6 pm, tour to follow at 7 pm. Bring a dish to share (and your own eating stuff). There’s no charge and no need to register.
To market, to market. New this week…apples! Also look for apricots, berries, many varieties of melons, peaches, arugula, basil, yellow & greens beans, beets, bok choi, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, dill, eggplant, fennel, garlic, ground cherries, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, varieties of lettuce, lima beans, mushrooms, mustard greens, okra, onions, peas, assorted peppers, potatoes, radishes, salad mix, scallions, shallots, summer squash, sweet corn, Swiss chard, tomatillos, cherry, Heirloom and slicing tomatoes, turnips, zucchini, and fresh cut flowers.
You’ll also find lots of good stuff for your Labor Day grilling – pasture-raised meats, fresh vegetables as well as eggs, baked goods, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.
Coming up. On September 9, Hamilton’s Grill Room in Lambertville is beginning a series called Here’s How Cooking Classes every 2nd Tuesday through December, including appearances by Evan Asoudegan (MOO), Max Hansen and the Pineville Tavern’s Andrew & Drew Abruzzese. Looks like fun. For more information, click here.
