When I picture the end of August, I think of cool breezes, late night BBQs, those final trips to the beach, and a nice, crisp glass of wine. There’s nothing like sitting outside with a bottle of white wine or a refreshing rosé, paired perfectly with good company (like your furry friends).
Thankfully, we live near some great wineries in Bucks and Hunterdon Counties, so take this week to explore them. If drinking isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other great end-of-August activities. Enjoy!
Wine for the season. White wine is the way to go this August, according to Ernest Valtri in a Bucks County Herald article published August 18. Valtri, a member of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s Wine Advisory Council, says that white wine is well-balanced and crisp enough for those hot summer August nights. If you need a red wine, however, he suggests red Zinfandel for BBQs or a Syrah for hot weather.
Take his suggestions and check out the local wineries (these are just some of the many wineries in and around Bucks County; see the Bucks County Wine Trail for a full listing):
- Peace Valley Winery: Pick up some Fredonia wine (a type of Concord grape) from Peace Valley Winery and/or pick-your-own Fredonia grapes during the weekend. This winery has a few dry or semi-dry white wines, and a few heavy red wines that will go nicely with grilled meat.
- Sand Castle Winery: Sand Castle grows European vinifera grapes for their wines. The winery makes a few crisp wines like its private reserve Chardonnay.
- New Hope Winery: Visit the winery’s Instagram page each Monday for its new segment: “Wine of the Week,” where it will feature its wines and fun facts. The winery has plenty of white wines to choose from.
- Wycombe Vineyards: Try out their semi-dry, light body white wines, or a fruity Pinot Grigio, or their popular Smokehouse red wine that pairs nicely with red meat. Wycombe just won four blue ribbons at the Middletown Grange Fair for their wines. Stop by and enjoy a glass on their lovely, shaded deck. [See our post, A fifteen dollar staycation]
