Sourdough Bread

This week, many restaurants are focused on Thanksgiving (see where you can dine out here) and our guess is you’re probably busy getting ready for the big holiday too. When you’re done picking up last-minute items, consider giving back to the community to help the hungry, or plan to do so in the near future. After all, it is the season of giving.

If you’re still trying to scrounge up some side dishes for Thanksgiving — stepping away from the same old stuff — we’ve got a few ideas in mind.

Brussels sprouts by Jamie Hollander

Kids are known for saying Brussel sprouts are “yucky,” but when you add crispy bacon, any vegetable can become delicious. Check out this recipe to see how you can doctor up the sprouts. If you’re looking for a meatless way to spruce up the vegetable, try adding shallots and walnuts for a new Thanksgiving staple.

Bread is a must-have for the table (how else are you going to mop up the gravy?) and Rillings Bucks County Bakery is taking orders today, Monday, November 23 for Thanksgiving orders. They have an assortment of pastries and pies, like apple lattice and pumpkin pie, but they also have breads and rolls like pumpernickel kaplens, snowflake rolls and challah bread. Call 215.357.3860 to place your order. Also Tabora Farm in Chalfont makes nineteen types of pies, most for $12.99. See their website for complete information.

Sourdough Bread

Stockton Market in New Jersey will be open on Wednesday, November 25 so you can pick up any last-minute
Thanksgiving trimmings. One of their vendors, Apple Ridge Farm, will have chicken pot pies and soup added to their selection of hearth baked breads. They specialize in stone oven baked sourdough breads where they use ingredients from their farm. Here’s a full list of their vendors which you are welcome to check out in case they have something you are looking for to make your dinner complete.

If you’re still searching for the best sweet treats, give Maryanne Pastry Shoppe a call to see what they have to offer for Thanksgiving dessert. Located in Doylestown, the shop has pastries, pies (amazing sticky buns) and lots of other goodies. You can reach them at 215.230.8885.

We haven’t forgotten our vegan and vegetarian friends. Holly Kirby, a vegetarian restaurateur in Bucks County gives some great tips and recipes on how to make family classics while still sticking to the vegan needs. Try out a citrus, fennel and pomegranate salad or quinoa pilaf with green apples, dried cranberries and pecans. With dishes that look this good (and no doubt, taste good) you don’t even need a centerpiece. She wrote a blog entry that includes the recipes to those dishes and more, which you can find here.

Turkey Balls! Last year the Wycombe Publick House introduced Turkey Balls, and started a new pre-Thanksgiving tradition in our household. What’s a turkey ball, you may ask? It’s Thanksgiving all rolled into one. A turkey ball is mashed potatoes and stuffing, with shredded turkey in the middle, formed into a ball, coated with panko crumbs and deep-fried. Then served with gravy over the top and a side of cranberry sauce. The turkey balls became so popular that they are now on the permanent menu. The Wycombe Publick House is in Wycombe, PA near the intersection of Township Line Road and Mill Creek Road in Wrightstown Township. See you there Wednesday night!

Rolling Harvest Food RescueIf you are done planning your dinner and looking for a way to give back, this week there is one place in particular where you can volunteer before the holiday. On Wednesday, November 25 head to Gravity Hill Farm in Titusville, NJ (which is Mercer County, but it’s a great way to give back so we had to mention it) and join them for their Final Harvest. From 9:30 am – 12 pm come to the farm to help harvest for local food pantries. People will be there ready to help, rain or shine. They will also be serving hot drinks and soup for your efforts.

Other Bucks County area places to volunteer include Rolling Harvest Food Rescuewhere they look for volunteers ages 14 and up to assist with the pick-up, delivery and occasional harvesting (gleaning) of donated fresh produce and healthy foods. Fisherman’s Marka non-profit that serves the New Hope-Lambertville area, are in need of volunteers for their Food Pantry, truck deliveries and keeping their campus tidy.

Cultivating Communities Campaign in Telford also is on a mission to increase year round access to local and fresh grown produce for low-income families in the North Penn/Indian Valley area. They’re looking for volunteers and they give flexible hours for weekly projects. United Way of Bucks County is always needs volunteers with a variety of talents who are willing to give time to a great cause. Visit their website to see what they have coming up and how you can help out.
